Benefits of Lip Fillers

Lip fillers offer a quick, noninvasive way to have fuller lips as well as get rid of any fine lines and wrinkles that appear around the mouth. A lip filler procedure involves injecting small amounts of a gel-like substance into areas of the lips needing enhancement. The treatment is performed in-office and can be completed within 15 minutes.

Most lip filler formulations contain hyaluronic acid, a substance that the body produces naturally. In effect, depleted amounts of this substance account for much of the reason why fine lines and wrinkles form. The effects of a lip filler include working to support and reshape the tissues that make up the lips.

Other benefits to expect include:

  • A minimally invasive treatment that can be performed very quickly with no downtime.
  • The ability to pace your treatments to achieve a gradual, subtle enhancement effect
  • Lip volume is entirely customizable based on controlling the amount that’s injected
  • Results are produced immediately, with the full outcome appearing within three to four days once minor swelling subsides
  • Results can last up to six months or more

Lip Fillers at Sapphire Advanced Aesthetics

Dr. Smith specializes in cosmetic procedures and has over 10 years of experience in the field. She performs lip augmentation using Juvéderm Volbella, the newest filler agent on the market. Since each person’s features and expectations are different, during your consultation Dr. Smith will take the time to go over your unique aesthetic goals, and help you create a look that is beautifully you.

Juvéderm Volbella

Juvéderm Volbella is formulated with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar molecule found in the human body, to enhance the look and shape of facial features like the lips. As the body ages, the level of hyaluronic acid in the body is depleted, leading to visible signs like wrinkles and sagging. Volbella restores and smooths the lips and the area around the mouth by replenishing the skin with hyaluronic acid directly.

Volbella is part of the VYCROSS® Collection manufactured by Allergan, the makers of Botox. VYCROSS® technology uniquely blends different molecular weights of hyaluronic acid to increase the lifespan of the Volbella treatment. Cross-linking hyaluronic acid molecules also helps create a smoother and more efficient filler with smoother results. A smoother filler means that our patients are less likely to experience pain and swelling during and after treatment, and results are long-lasting and natural. The formula also includes lidocaine, a topical anaesthetic, further ensuring that the treatment is largely pain-free, even in sensitive areas like the lips.

Volbella is FDA approved for lip augmentation, and is designed to plump and add fullness to the lips. For patients who are afraid of looking “overdone” or “fake”, rest assured that Volbella’s buildable nature means that it can be used to create extremely subtle, soft, and natural looking enhancements – the “you-but-better” look. For patients looking for more volumizing, Dr. Smith can also customize the procedure to help you create a more pronounced pout or lift.

As the newest dermal filler agent on the market, Volbella is the first injectable lip enhancement product approved by the FDA for use in treating perioral rhytids or perioral lines. Perioral lines are the fine vertical lines found on the outside of the mouth that begin to appear as the skin ages and loses hydration. Commonly referred to as smoker’s lines, filling and plumping these areas in the lips goes a long way towards decreasing the signs of aging. Perioral lines were previously difficult to treat, and Dr. Smith is excited about being able to provide a solution that works.

Volbella is also effective in smoothing away facial pitting caused by acne. Treatments are customized to each patient, and Dr. Smith will work with you individually to determine which manner of application is best suited for your specific concerns. The results of Volbella injections can last up to a year. Please note that Volbella is only recommended for patients 22 years of age or older, and has not been clinically tested in younger patients.

Volbella offers a myriad of benefits to the right patients:

  • Minimally invasive
  • No incisions necessary and no scars left behind
  • Procedure is quick
  • No downtime
  • FDA approved
  • Only product on the market specifically designed to treat perioral lines

Lip Fillers: FAQs

Is Volbella safe?

Yes, Volbella has been approved by the FDA and is safe for cosmetic injection.

Is the Procedure Painful?

The procedure itself can causes slight pinches as the filler is injected. However there should not be much discomfort as the formula includes the topical anesthetic lidocaine, which reduces pain. Dr. Smith also ices the lips for 10 minutes afterward to minimize any discomfort. You can opt to have your lips numbed beforehand much like when a dentist injects a topical anesthetic into your gums. A numbing cream can also be used. You should not expect to feel any pain post-procedure.

Are There Side Effects?

Slight bruising, swelling and tenderness are common side effects from lip filler procedures. These effects only last a few days. As far as allergic reactions go, the hyaluronic acid ingredient is something the body produces naturally, so the likelihood of having an allergic reaction is minimal.

What’s Involved with a Lip Filler Procedure?

Dr. Smith starts off by marking the injection sites where the filler will go. Next, she’ll clean the area with alcohol and apply numbing cream or a local anesthetic. From there, she injects the formulation into your lips and applies ice packs once the procedure is complete.

What’s Involved with Recovery?

The side effects of Volbella treatments are minor but can include swelling, bruising, redness, pain, itching, discoloration, and tenderness. If these symptoms develop, they usually subside within a few days after the injections. Volbella requires little to no recovery time, so you can return to work or go about the affairs of your day once the procedure is done.

How Long Does it Last?

Depending on the specific patient, Volbella treatments have been found to last nine months to one year. Annual appointments are required to maintain positive results, but you may discover subsequent treatments need less product to produce the same effects.

What Happens During a Consultation?

During the consultation, Dr. Smith will ask what your expectations are regarding the results or look you want from the procedure. A thorough medical history will be taken. Dr. Smith will then go over all your options to ensure you are fully aware of what the procedure entails, and to better customize your treatment.
