History of Liposuction

Liposuction has become a popular cosmetic treatment in recent years, but the history of this procedure begins nearly a century ago. Experts continue to develop safe and efficient technological advancements in the liposuction process, so it is interesting to see how far cosmetic enhancement procedures have come over the years.

Current and prospective liposuction patients may take interest in learning more about this procedure. Dr. Leslie Smith, a cosmetic surgeon located near Minneapolis, describes the history of liposuction and the treatment available at her practice now.

Early Body Contouring Efforts

Body contouring experts began theorizing on the possibility of fat removal procedures as early as the 1920s. Surgeons would not develop a method of breaking up fat and removing it through a tube until 1974. This early version of liposuction was called the blunt tunneling method.

In the years that followed, doctors updated the cannula and methodology to reduce health risks during the procedure. By the 1990s, cosmetic surgeons were well-versed in imaging technology and pain relief medication to make sure patients were safe and comfortable during the liposuction procedure.

Traditional Liposuction Procedure

Though traditional liposuction became popular, it was an invasive procedure that required IV sedation. A medical professional would place the cannula, or tube, in the abdomen, legs, or arms to break up fat cells and suction them out of the body.

This method relied on manual effort from the surgeon and tended to also affect surrounding nerves and blood cells. This could leave patients with swelling or bruising side effects following the procedure.

Modern Tickle Liposuction

Modern technology has allowed liposuction to be more comfortable for patients, requiring a local anesthetic rather than sedation. The surgeon makes a small incision to insert the improved cannula which uses vibrations and rotations to break and remove fat cells.

The process is gentler than traditional procedures, and patients can need less time to recover after this Tickle liposuction treatment than previous technology could allow. Patients can see immediate weight loss results, though doctors recommend a balanced diet and regular exercise for optimal wellness.
